What my first HR internship taught me about the real world of work

The summer of 2023 was when I got to experience my very first internship at Nakilat’s HR department. Stepping into a professional setting for the first time felt exciting, a little nerve-wracking but mostly eye-opening. It was the moment when all the theories I’d learned in class started to make sense in real life.


During my time there, I got the chance to see how an HR department actually functions on a daily basis. I helped with recruitment tasks, attended meetings and learned about employee engagement and development. What surprised me most was how much HR is about people, not just paperwork. Every decision, conversation, and policy had a purpose which was to support the team and make sure everyone felt valued and motivated.


One of the biggest lessons I learned was how important communication and attention to detail are in HR. Even small actions, like how you phrase an email or listen to a colleague’s concern, can make a big difference. I also got to see how empathy and professionalism go hand in hand, especially when dealing with employee issues or team dynamics.


Looking back, my internship at Nakilat helped me grow both personally and professionally. I became more confident, more organized, and even more passionate about pursuing a career in HR. It showed me that learning never stops it continues through real experiences, teamwork and the willingness to take on new challenges.


That summer gave me a solid foundation and a clear sense of direction for my future. I’m really grateful for the opportunity and for the people who guided me along the way.

    Nice story! And yes, you are right professional experience teaches us a lot about how an organization works. Every department plays an important role and contributes to the company’s growth.The corporate environment teaches us many things that we can't learn just by studying.

Behind the Scenes at London Bakery: Seeing Operations Come to Life

Usually in operations and supply chain management lessons are limited to the classroom. As students we are taught about processes, workflows, inventory and efficiency in theory, however it is rare to see how all of this works in real life. That changed for me when I got to visit London Bakery with my operations and supply chain management professor as a part of university field visit.  The moment we stepped behind the scenes it was clear that baking at this scale is much more that just making bread. Each stage of the operations was carefully structured, from getting raw ingredients to preparing, baking, packaging and distributing products across different outlets.
